About Me

Zach is a consultant psychologist and sessional academic based in Brisbane, Australia. He has a bachelor's degree in Psychological Science, a master's degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Queensland, and a master's degree in Clinical Psychology from Griffith University. He is a full Member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), and is currently a registrar in both Counselling and Clinical Psychology.

Since 2012, Zach has taught psychology and counselling skills at the university level. Zach is currently a sessional academic and tutor in the Master of Psychology and Master of Counselling programs at UQ. Previously, Zach has been a sessional lecturer and tutor in the Bachelor of Counselling program at Griffith University (Mt Gravatt and Gold Coast), and he was a member of the teaching staff at the Brisbane Academy of Musical Theatre (BAMT), where he taught aspiring musical theatre performers about the benefits of psychological health and wellness.

Zach's academic research has thus far been focused around two distinct areas of ePsychology - the impact of online social media on health, and the role of the internet in supporting bereaved people who are coping with significant loss. Zach has an interest in investigating the role of technology in impacting health and healthcare.

In addition to his academic work, Zach provides psychological services and psychotherapy to both young people and adults as a consultant psychologist in private practice. He has previously worked as a psychologist in corrective services, secondary and tertiary education, disability and employment services, community not-for-profit organisations, and the public sector. Zach is currently accepting new clients at Lilley Place Clinical Psychology in Indooroopilly.

What does a psychologist do?

Psychologists can have many roles in many different settings.

Psychological Counselling

A psychologist is a person who has been trained in the use of psychological therapy to help people in coping with a whole range of psychological conditions and complex presentations, including stress, low mood, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, relationship concerns, family difficulties, and life transitions. Psychologists can work with both children and adults, in an individual or a group setting.

Reporting

Psychologists are trained to compile thorough psychological reports for a multitude of purposes including educational, occupational, or legal purposes. These reports often include a client's relevant background history, case formulations, treatment plans, assessment results and their interpretations, and future recommendations for treatment or support.

Assessment

A psychologist can use a wide range of standardised and semi-structured psychometric tests to determine the extent of a person's presenting problems or to help a person understand more about their own strengths and weaknesses. Psychologists can also conduct cognitive assessments (e.g. intelligence testing, memory testing), personality assessments, and assess behavioural concerns.

Research

A psychologist is a scientist-practitioner, and as such is mandated to provide evidence-based treatments. Psychologists are trained to monitor and interpret the psychological literature, in order to provide the most appropriate and research-based treatment options for their clients. Many psychologists also conduct and publish research to extend the current body of knowledge.
